Garden Wildlife and Insects

from howconnie on 03/02/2015 12:14 AM

I'm so excited that I had three beneficial insects stop by my garden so far this year. Two different butterflies, a bumblebee, a wasp, and a lady beetle. Whose nosing around your garden?

My project is to create a natural organic balance with insect and wildlife, in the city it hard to attract benefitual creatures so to get three plus the butterflies is pretty good.

I think I will try to make some wine this year. Think I'll try for dandelions first and if I get enough watermelon rind, that too.

hoping to pickle some watermelon rind and other vegetables

I use old suitcases, paint cans, gumbo pots that got holes in them, and purses for planters. The most interesting might be the suitcase have wheels so they're easy to move.

Trying replant the tops of vegetables to get additional food. Shred old plants and use them as mulch.

Re: Gardening Kitchen Scraps - Vegetables That Will Regrow

I just got part of a sweet Spanish onion to grow. Planted some celery scraps. Now I'm working on a daikon radish, and celery root tops.

Also I just some sprouted onions and sunflower seed in pots to see what happens. A lady at the farmers market sells all kinds of sprouts.

Re: SUGGESTIONS ON GROWING CHIVES??

from howconnie on 03/01/2015 08:30 PM

They like cool spring weather to grow from seed. try dappled shade or plant under taller plants  keep them cool longer. I plant them like grass seed to trim and eat. Also pull up plants and place them in water at sunny window,  They will continue to grow for a month then put them back to get seed

Do you thin your seedlings or just let them grow in a cluster

We never get a lot of rain, but I will try some peanuts in a laundry basket too. So I should plant them now for fall peanuts?

I haven't had much success with growing scraps but now that I have a ltitle more information I'm going to get growing. Carrot and onion would be divine next to a papaya tree.

Oh I love my pineapple plant and would love for it to grow a pineapple. It makes a wonderful companion plant for roses.
