Re: Wine Making - Fruit Of The Vine🍇
from Backwoodswife on 02/23/2015 03:12 AMThat sounds really great, Thanks for the links! I have some "sugar wine" and hard cider brewing in my sewing room, only the second time on the cider and first time on the sugar wine. I was hoping to turn it into hard tea, might have to grab your chai spice tea! I'm hoping to do more of a fruit crop someday. They are harder to get motivated on because there usually isn't that instant gratification. The cucumber wine sounds interesting! I was thinking alot of tomato wine this year but can't get that smell out of my nose from the fermentation needed to preserve seed... I just might bite the bullet and try it this year. I agree the more we can do our selves the the better!

Wine Making - Fruit Of The Vine🍇
from katjaqu on 02/23/2015 12:23 AMI've been making a little bit of wine.
Persimmon, Chai Ultra Spice Tea, and Bradford Pear wine.
The kitchen smells a bit like the inside of a bar!
I'm not really much of a drinker but I love the idea of being able to make the things that I want rather than buying them.
There is a certain amount of freedom in being self sufficient.
The idea of planting the seed that grows the fruit, that makes the jam or wine is one of the most rewarding things you can do.
When I grew my National Cucumbers last year I let a lot of them grow full term like I always do to harvest the seed.
I really don't like to waste anything so I looked around the internet for a good recipe for ripe yellow pickles and found
"GRANDMOTHER'S OLD FASHIONED RIPE SWEET PICKLES"
on Cooks.com
Http://www.cooks.com/recipe/2h7ss0sw/grandmothers-old-fashioned-ripe-sweet-pickles.html
I'm not a real sweet pickle fan, but these were the best sweet pickles I've ever had. I made quite a few pint jars of them for my husband and gave some to friends.
I will be making extra this year, they were that good!
When I made the pickles the cucumbers had to be pealed, so looked up a recipe for cucumber wine. Yeah, I know that sounds a bit weird but I didn't want to waste any part of my cucumbers.
I found a recipe for the cucumber wine on WinePress.US
http://www.winepress.us/forums/index.php?/topic/1150-cucumber-wine/page-3
It still has a few months to go before it will be ready to drink, so I'm not sure if it is something I will make again.
I was pretty excited that I used all the cucumbers with just a little bit going to the compost bin.
The Best Fudge Ever!
from socalgardengal on 02/22/2015 08:10 PMThought I would start this thread with something sweet :)
Milk Chocolate Fudge
3 cups Milk Chocolate Chips (or any flavor really)
1 (14oz.)Can sweetened condenced milk
1/8th of a teaspoon Kosher Salt
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup of chopped nuts( any that you like)optional
Grease an 8x8 square glass baking pan or 11x7 retangle glass pan with butter. In a heavy saucepan, over medium low heat, melt chocolate chips with the sweet condenced milk and salt. Stir or whisk until creamy and smooth. About 3-5 mins. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract and nuts if using. Pour into the buttered pan. Smooth out the top with the back of a spoon. Chill 1-2 hours in refridgerator before cutting into 1inch pieces.
Enjoy! This is an easy recipe. Takes about 10 mins to make. :)

Pineapple Sage
from Backwoodswife on 02/22/2015 03:38 PMThe kids got me a pot of Pineapple sage last year for Mother's day. If you haven't smelt it your missing out!! I put it right by my front door so I could touch it each time I passed it and all my family and guests were just in love with it as well! I made at least 20 cuttings from it and planted it as my back border plant, the cuttings root so quickly and it grows so fast. This is easily one of my favorite herbs! We made alot of teas with it but found when dried it looses alot of it's scent. Wondering if anyone else has used this in recipes or for any other uses? I cut one back and brought it in for the winter, and it is now coming back to life! Cant wait for spring!
