Re: Gardening Kitchen Scraps - Vegetables That Will Regrow
from Backwoodswife on 02/22/2015 03:24 AMThis is alot of fun, I have a few "garbage" plants myself, and avocado seedling about 18 inches high, A pineapple top will make a really nice houseplant, it took me a few tries but if you rip off enough leaves to expose the root nodes works beautifully! My favorite is my Key lime tree, thick dark glossy leaves and covered in long thorns! The leaves can be used in Thai cooking, though I've never tried, couldn't bring myself to rip a leaf off.. Mine is about two feet tall and two years old. I drove hubby crazy about two years ago going to the supermarket just to buy things I could use as planting experiments
Speaking of supermarket planting, this is something I just did today and have had great luck in the past with,
using their herbs for cuttings! I've successfully rooted sage, thyme and mint from store bought herbs. I pottedt up a bunch of thyme in a today. I've actually had them root up faster than some of the cuttings from my garden plants, wondering if the refrigeration period brings them into "spring mode" better once planted??? Hmmm... I feel some more experiments coming on!
Gardening Kitchen Scraps - Vegetables That Will Regrow
from katjaqu on 02/22/2015 01:07 AMPlant your carrot tops, they will not grow a carrot but they will grow seed.
When you cut an onion, cut off the root end leaving about 1" of the onion place in a tray of water. You should see roots develop in a few days. Once this happens you can plant it. It will grow two to four more onions.
