Re: Food Grade Buckets

from katjaqu on 03/03/2015 01:51 AM

They were throwing them away before I started asking them to save them for me.
The buckets were going right into the landfill.
I really try to recycle as much as I can.
I'm sure they would start charging me if they really gave it much thought.

I share a few of them with friends because I have more than enough.

Food Grade Buckets

from katjaqu on 03/02/2015 08:31 AM

The bakery at Kroger's and several other local stores
save their 3, 4, 5, and 6 gallon food grade buckets with lids for me at no charge.
I pick them up twice a week so they don't mind keeping them.
I asked them not to spend time cleaning them.
I use the hair dyer and a little Goo-Gone to remove the label and clean them with bleach and Dawn dishwashing liquid.
They're really nice buckets to store food in or use for wine making or to use in the garden.

Okra With Green Tomatoes and Corn

3 large green tomatoes, unpeeled, cored and cubed

1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
1/4 teaspoon salt
fresh ground black pepper

In a large skillet fry bacon until crisp but not burned.
Remove bacon from skillet
Meanwhile cut the corn from the cob.
Combined cornmeal and salt in a large zip seal bag.
Add okra, tomatoes and corn.
Shake to completely coat vegetables.
Add contents of the bag into the skillet with the bacon grease and cook on medium heat until golden brown.
Add crumbled bacon and black pepper.

Re: Wine Making - Fruit Of The Vine🍇

from katjaqu on 03/02/2015 01:08 AM

Hi Connie,
I made Dandelion Wine this past summer. It has to age until the end of June before we can drink it. I did a taste test and it is really good.

I also made Wild Violet Wine and I really liked it too.

I'm posting the links to both recipes if you want to try them.
Dandelion wine #1 is the recipe that I used.

Re: SUGGESTIONS ON GROWING CHIVES??

from katjaqu on 03/01/2015 11:30 PM

Northen Kentucky close to Cincinnati.
I have tried growing them in the garden and in a pot.
They never came up. I have really good soil and don't really have problems with anything else that I grow so I really don't understand why I haven't been able to get them to grow.

Re: DEHYDRATING - Making Tomato Powder

from katjaqu on 03/01/2015 11:17 PM

Yes, you can absolutely dehydrate any fruit or vegetable and grind them into powder for use in making your own seasonings and others recipes.
The sky is the limit!
The next time peel a zucchini or have an over abundance of peppers, cabbage or other vegetables dehydrate them.

I dehydrated cabbage to use in soup and it was such a good snack that it never made it into the soup.

Re: Orange Bread

I've never had it with any other type of citrus but I can't see why you couldn't try it with lemon or something.

This is a recipe that my mom and older sisters use to make.
I have been eating this all my life and it is one of my favorites
I love lemon so let me know if you make it.

Re: Gardening Kitchen Scraps - Vegetables That Will Regrow

from katjaqu on 03/01/2015 10:19 PM

Connie,
I did grow celery from the stalk and it grew pretty well.

When I cut the celery I left about three inches at the bottom of the bunch and stuck in water until it rooted.
I planted it and grew new celery.
