Wine Making - Fruit Of The Vine🍇

from katjaqu on 02/23/2015 12:23 AM

I've been making a little bit of wine.
Persimmon, Chai Ultra Spice Tea, and Bradford Pear wine.
The kitchen smells a bit like the inside of a bar!
I'm not really much of a drinker but I love the idea of being able to make the things that I want rather than buying them.
There is a certain amount of freedom in being self sufficient.
The idea of planting the seed that grows the fruit, that makes the jam or wine is one of the most rewarding things you can do.

When I grew my National Cucumbers last year I let a lot of them grow full term like I always do to harvest the seed.
I really don't like to waste anything so I looked around the internet for a good recipe for ripe yellow pickles and found
"GRANDMOTHER'S OLD FASHIONED RIPE SWEET PICKLES"
on Cooks.com
Http://www.cooks.com/recipe/2h7ss0sw/grandmothers-old-fashioned-ripe-sweet-pickles.html

I'm not a real sweet pickle fan, but these were the best sweet pickles I've ever had. I made quite a few pint jars of them for my husband and gave some to friends.
I will be making extra this year, they were that good!

When I made the pickles the cucumbers had to be pealed, so looked up a recipe for cucumber wine. Yeah, I know that sounds a bit weird but I didn't want to waste any part of my cucumbers.
I found a recipe for the cucumber wine on WinePress.US

http://www.winepress.us/forums/index.php?/topic/1150-cucumber-wine/page-3

It still has a few months to go before it will be ready to drink, so I'm not sure if it is something I will make again.

I was pretty excited that I used all the cucumbers with just a little bit going to the compost bin.

That sounds really great, Thanks for the links! I have some "sugar wine" and hard cider brewing in my sewing room, only the second time on the cider and first time on the sugar wine. I was hoping to turn it into hard tea, might have to grab your chai spice tea! I'm hoping to do more of a fruit crop someday. They are harder to get motivated on because there usually isn't that instant gratification. The cucumber wine sounds interesting! I was thinking alot of tomato wine this year but can't get that smell out of my nose from the fermentation needed to preserve seed... I just might bite the bullet and try it this year. I agree the more we can do our selves the the better!

I have a few bottles of green tomato wine aging that I made this past summer.
I love fried green tomatoes and wanted to can them to get us through the Winter.
I had a great deal of end pieces left over and decided to make wine.
I found a recipe on homegrown.com

http://www.homegrown.org/m/discussion?id=2263119%3ATopic%3A175182

I did a taste test and it wasn't bad. I think when it has had time to age it will be better.

I really love the Chai Ultra Spice Tea. I get free samples of it in the mail all the time and thought it would be worth trying.
Here is the link for the free sample.
FYI, I never give out my real email address "[email protected]" phone number "999-999-9999" or other personal info when I order samples.

I had considered starting a thread of free sample links but thought I should probably talk to you first and get your thoughts on the idea.
I know it's off the garden path, excuse the pun.

I think I will try to make some wine this year. Think I'll try for dandelions first and if I get enough watermelon rind, that too.

hoping to pickle some watermelon rind and other vegetables

Hi Connie,
I made Dandelion Wine this past summer. It has to age until the end of June before we can drink it. I did a taste test and it is really good.

I also made Wild Violet Wine and I really liked it too.

I'm posting the links to both recipes if you want to try them.
Dandelion wine #1 is the recipe that I used.
