GROWING PEANUTS

from katjaqu on 02/24/2015 11:03 PM

I grow my peanuts in laundry baskets because they drain well and are easy to harvest.
Peanuts grow best in a loose 50% dirt and 50% sand mix. I just buy a couple of bags of play sand and mix in with the soil.
Plant seeds about 8" apart and keep moist until plants are about 4" high. Don't over water the peanuts while they are growing. They need to dry out between watering or they will rot.

They should take about 100 to 130 days about September.

I like to eat them raw. Most people roast and salt them.
Don't eat them if they are really green.

Enjoy
Kathy

Thank you Kathy for posting your growing info. It will help alot. I was going to try in Rubbermaid totes, but the laundry basket idea is great for the drainage. Do you put like some sort of weed barrier or cloth before the sand/soil mix? Do you have to stake the plants or just let them do their own thing?

Hi Christine,

Put a piece of landscape cloth in the bottom of the basket before you put the soil and sand mix in it.
It will drain without losing the soil.
Also, I made holes in the bottom of my baskets to allow for drainage.

I don't do anything special with them while they are growing. I just let them grow.

If we get a lot of rain I usually move the basket from the garden to a dry area to avoid over watering.

The biggest thing that I worry about are the chipmunks taking my peanut seeds before they have time to sprout.
Yes, I've caught them at it!
I really do love to watch them when they think no one is around.
It really is quite amusing to watch them squabbling over a peanut.
I had to replant peanuts three times this past Summer and tie aluminum pie plates around them to keep the chipmunks out.

We never get a lot of rain, but I will try some peanuts in a laundry basket too. So I should plant them now for fall peanuts?

Hi Connie,
I live in zone 6 and our temperature right now is 18 degrees. I usually don't plant mine until after Mother's Day but that is because of the frost.
I know you are in sunny Southern California so you may have a longer growing season.
You may want to talk to some of the people in your area about the best planting time.
If something happens and they don't grow and you need more seeds just let me know. I have some peanuts that I put away for planting.

Hi Everyone,
I am posting a link on harvesting and preserving peanuts.
I have this info printed placed in my garden binder and thought it would be useful to everyone who will be growing peanut for the first time this year.
