Frugal gardening

from zackey on 02/27/2015 05:40 PM

I enjoyed the Frugal Gardening site on Gardenweb even though it was a slow site. We live in a very poor, rural county in SE Georgia. We have no recycling service like we did when we lived in New Jersey or Pennsylvania. I reused and recycle as much as I can.  I use the plastic boxes that mushrooms come in as seed flats. I just punch a few holes in the bottom with a knife. I can plant four seeds per box and use a serrated knife to separate them when it's time to plant them in the ground. I use the green styrofoam containers for plant saucers. I have several clear saucers, but they always look dirty. I can put 2 4" pots on my styro tray. Do you have any gardening recyle tips?

I reuse gallon water jugs for my smaller plants. I also save take out containers for seed starting. I have an old bookshelf that I will be using in the garden for a premade raised bed. I also had an old canapy that the top ripped off so I disassembled it and use the poles for my tomatoes. I love to reuse stuff as long as there are no bad chemicals in the material. I started to find pallets in the alleys to take apart to make some planters, BUT I have to make sure that they are not the treated kind. I found a few sites that have recycle projects for garden art as well. If I can find it in my bookmarks I will post some links for everyone

Thanks! I'd love to see the info. They had a play at church last year that used bamboo stakes as a roof for a hut. They were going to throw them out. I now have enough bamboo stakes for the rest of my life!

I use old suitcases, paint cans, gumbo pots that got holes in them, and purses for planters. The most interesting might be the suitcase have wheels so they're easy to move.

Trying replant the tops of vegetables to get additional food. Shred old plants and use them as mulch.
