GROWING SUGARCANE

You can grow sugarcane in most zones.
You may have to go to an International Market to find it for planting because most garden centers won't have it.
You will need to buy fresh thick healthy cane stalks with about 4 to 5 nodes or joints.
You can buy a long one and cut it down.
This is a perennial so make sure you find a good spot for it before you plant it.
It will need full sun and will grow best if it is not planted in the shadow of corn or other tall plants.
You can also plant in a container if you are rooftop gardening or you're just limited on space.
You will need to plant the canes on their side so the new canes grow up from each of the nodes.
They should be planted about 5" - 6" deep and covered well with soil.
You may want to put a few wooden markers with strings attached to them around the area so you will remember where you planted them.
You won't see anything right away. It may take a year before you start to see anything come up.

from katjaqu on 02/26/2015 12:51 AMHi Christine,
I lived in Florida when I was a kid and my Aunt had sugarcane growing in her backyard. It was always a treat for me to visit her because she would let the kids chop themselves a cane.
One whole cane would last a week.
I'm really trying to grow a variety of things on my property and be more self-sufficient, so I planted some this past spring. It is really better to plant it in the fall but I needed to get it in the dirt so I planted it early.
No sign of it yet, but it takes a while to establish its self.
I live close to a huge international market and their organic produce is limitless.
I was able to get a few really fresh healthy canes there to plant.
