Re: HAVE: Horseradish Plant Root
from howconnie on 04/01/2015 03:42 AMHow much would postage cost? I'm so excited my Virginia peanuts are growing. I got at least three plants growing in laundry baskets like you said.

from katjaqu on 04/01/2015 04:16 AMReally? That's great!
I've haven't even planted mine yet because of this crazy weather. It snowed here a couple of days ago and today it was in the 70's
I wondered how long the growing season is where you are. If I lived there I would be growing oranges!
Do you want anymore peanuts? I have more than enough to plant so if you can use anymore just let me know.
I think sending the root shouldn't be more than 4 stamps.
I have plenty of bubble mailers.
When you plant the Horseradish root you will need to use a deep pot or bucket.
Let me know if you want it so I can get it before the lawnmower does.
I think my husband plans to run the mower this weekend and it will make it hard to find with all the other green stuff coming up in the field.
Re: HAVE: Horseradish Plant Root
from howconnie on 04/01/2015 11:28 AMSounds good, I'll try growing my own horseradish, why not.
I have to plant watermelon and okra in the winter to have at a harvest so I thought peanuts might need the same treatment.
I'm happy to take a few more peanuts off your hands to use as back ups in case I make a rookie mistake. You can leave them in the shells to store.
The home grown citrus here is amazing. I get crates from my neighbors. I'm finishing some grapefruit, bitter orange and sweet lemons I got from my neighbors, they're so juicy and keep pretty well. We grow great beans and salad, tropical fruits like papaya.
Of course I am longing for southern watermelon, big tomatoes and okra; which like more heat and humidity than we get Dreaming of showing up to the garden potluck with home grown Beef steak tomato, boiled peanuts, fried okra and a twenty pound watermelon instead of bean salad.

Re: HAVE: Horseradish Plant Root
from howconnie on 04/12/2015 11:14 PMThanks, my package arrived and that is some beautiful horseradish, going to share the peanuts with my seed savers club. Thinking I might start some plants for them.
How many peanut plants do you grow per laundry basket? How close together should I plant and could I transplant them or would I have to start a new seed?
Thank you.

Re: HAVE: Horseradish Plant Root
from katjaqu on 04/13/2015 05:45 AMI usually grow two to three plants pre basket about 8" or so apart depending on how large the basket is. You can grow them in a large pot but you will need plenty of drainage so they don't rot.
You don't want to transplant them once they are established. They will have lots of tiny little peanuts growing on them and you could shock them and stunt their growth.
Best to give someone the seeds and let them direct sow them where they can grow uninterrupted.
I did a post a few weeks ago on how I grow them.
