Gardening Kitchen Scraps - Vegetables That Will Regrow

Plant your carrot tops, they will not grow a carrot but they will grow seed.

When you cut an onion, cut off the root end leaving about 1" of the onion place in a tray of water. You should see roots develop in a few days. Once this happens you can plant it. It will grow two to four more onions.

This is alot of fun, I have a few "garbage" plants myself, and avocado seedling about 18 inches high, A pineapple top will make a really nice houseplant, it took me a few tries but if you rip off enough leaves to expose the root nodes works beautifully! My favorite is my Key lime tree, thick dark glossy leaves and covered in long thorns! The leaves can be used in Thai cooking, though I've never tried, couldn't bring myself to rip a leaf off.. Mine is about two feet tall and two years old. I drove hubby crazy about two years ago going to the supermarket just to buy things I could use as planting experiments

Speaking of supermarket planting, this is something I just did today and have had great luck in the past with,
using their herbs for cuttings! I've successfully rooted sage, thyme and mint from store bought herbs. I pottedt up a bunch of thyme in a today. I've actually had them root up faster than some of the cuttings from my garden plants, wondering if the refrigeration period brings them into "spring mode" better once planted??? Hmmm... I feel some more experiments coming on!

I love to grow things from scraps too. I have a beautiful Kiwi vine and I have also grown starfruit, papayas, mangos and avocados all grown from scraps. I try regrowing the spring onions in water, but I never seem to pay enough attention to them.
Years ago, when DH worked around a country club, he would bring me lots of pineapple tops. I have very sandy soil so they grew beautifully. I once lined an entire flower bed with them. They make awesome plants.
I will have to try the herbs though. I had never thought of that.

I haven't had much success with growing scraps but now that I have a ltitle more information I'm going to get growing. Carrot and onion would be divine next to a papaya tree.

Oh I love my pineapple plant and would love for it to grow a pineapple. It makes a wonderful companion plant for roses.

Now I have to go buy a bag of organic white and purple carrots. How long do you let them grow?  I do my green onions alot. I also have avacado, 4 White Sapote and 6 macadamia seedlings.

I just got part of a sweet Spanish onion to grow. Planted some celery scraps. Now I'm working on a daikon radish, and celery root tops.

Also I just some sprouted onions and sunflower seed in pots to see what happens. A lady at the farmers market sells all kinds of sprouts.

Hi Christine,
I never thought of trying the different verities of carrots but that is a good idea.

It really doesn't take long for the carrot tops to start growing. They will flower and then go to seed.

I wonder if you could do that with parsnip tops?

Connie,
I did grow celery from the stalk and it grew pretty well.

When I cut the celery I left about three inches at the bottom of the bunch and stuck in water until it rooted.
I planted it and grew new celery.
